Rosary Society

 Rosary Society History

In October of 2002, Our Holy Father John Paul II wrote  his apostolic letter “Rosarium Virginis Mariae” and declared October 2002 through October 2003 “The Year of the Rosary.” We, the Rosary Society of St. Stephen’s Parish were proud to celebrate our 110th anniversary during this special time.

Not much is written about the beginnings of this organization, but, we do know that our first Pastor, Rev. Stephen Szymanowski, met with 17 women of the Parish in 1893 and led them in forming a “Rosary Society”.

The first meeting of this organization was held on October 2, 1893.  The women were encouraged to become involved in all parish devotions and religious celebrations. They also played a special part in the first mission held in the parish from January 14th to the 29th, 1899, during which more women were encouraged to become Rosarians.

About one year later on January 7, 1900, after all papers were received from Rome, “The Holy Rosary Confraternity” was canonically established by Father Paul W. Sims, a Dominican Father from New York City.  At that time the Rosary Society had about 125 members.

Under the spiritual direction of all of our pastors, Rev. Julian Zielinski, Msgr. Joseph Urban, Msgr. Zenon Lesniowski, Rev. Alexander Zdaniewicz, Msgr. Casimir  Ladzinski, Msgr. Robert Zamorski, Rev. Leon Kasprzyk, Rev. John Stec and currently Rev. Peter Chyla, we have been encouraged to  develop a personal relationship with Mary and be faithful to the recitation of the Rosary.

Under the leadership of Presidents Frances Kosturska, Josephine Michalak, Walerja Hubka, Helen Wagner, Martha Fielek, Alina Kowalski, and Eileen Nowicki  the Rosary Society has always been dedicated to working for the good of the Parish. The most recent accomplishments of the organization were the restoration of the stained glass window originally donated by the Rosary Society when the church was built, the purchase of a new Marian Vestment, the purchase of a new banner for the society, the purchase of a set of funeral vestments and a new pall for the parish, the purchase of new Christmas trees for church decoration and new altar cloths.  Through the generosity and hard work of members and the support of all parishioners we also are able to contribute financially to the church renovation projects.

We thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed on us and we pray in a special way for all who have worked with us and have already gone to their eternal reward. We ask Mary to continue to keep us all under her patronage and pray that by word and more important by example we may encourage others to join this organization.
